The De Valette Chamber Orchestra opens both Teatru Manoel’s and its own 2026/27 season with a programme that places the voice of the strings centre stage. The expressive world of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major is brought to life by an exceptional interpreter: French cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière, winner of the 2017 Queen Elisabeth Competition and recipient of the 2018 Victoire de la Musique Classique as Instrumental Soloist of the Year. From Haydn’s world of poise and light, the programme moves into the deeper emotional landscape of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, music of extraordinary beauty and dramatic intensity.
Carmine Lauri, Music Director
Victor Julien-Laferrière, cello
Programme
Joseph Haydn: Cello Concerto No.1 in C major, Hob. VIIb:1
Franz Schubert: String Quartet No.14 in D minor, D.810 Death and the Maiden, arranged for string orchestra by Gustav Mahler
