This concert programme explores two brilliant sonatas - the first of Franz Schubert’s late sonatas (No.18) in the warm key of G major, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Appassionata (Sonata No.23 in F minor).
Despite Schubert’s popularity, he has widely been regarded as the successor of Beethoven, and his sonatas have somehow been neglected. Apart from just a few of his sonatas (including one of his last works, the Bb major sonata), most are less often played for no particular reason. Through this programme, the composer is given the recognition he is due, with his music arguably standing as a continuation where Beethoven left off.
This concert will hopefully rekindle more interest in Schubert’s music, in anticipation of the 200th anniversary since his death approaching in 3 years time (2028), preceded by Beethoven’s own 200th anniversary a year before (2027).
