Teatru Manoel presents its own production of Euripides’ MEDEA in a version by Ben Power directed by Bettina Paris, featuring Becky Camilleri in the title role, Nathan Brimmer as Jason and Mikhail Basmadjian as Kreon, together with a cast of seasoned actors.

Medea, the most disturbing of Greek tragic heroines, created by Euripides almost 2,500 years ago, is often portrayed as a she-devil, a murderous manipulator who is wild with love and rage. In this production, she is a woman who is desperate to take control of her life, betrayed by a man she deeply cares for but who chooses to begin a new life with another woman. Medea is pushed to edge by his actions and the society she finds herself in. This contemporary version of the script explores every nuance of a character known for the murder of her children. Medea is not insane, but intelligent, fierce, broken, loving and relentless. It is as much her tragic story as it is the community’s. It is a story about love, betrayal, and the pressures of societal expectations.

Movement features heavily in the performance, pushing forward complexities of character, adding to the detail of the work and the storytelling and navigating the collective’s emotional arch. Our Medea presents a familiar world, where we see ourselves and own community within the work. The story of Medea shines as one not so far removed from our own.
